Terms of Use
Last updated: October 6, 2026
These Terms of Use apply to your use of Container Gardening (“the site”). By using the site, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree with them, please do not use the site.
What the site provides
The site publishes free guides about growing plants in pots and containers, for general information and personal enjoyment. We work to keep the guides clear and accurate, but we do not promise that every guide is free of errors or that you will get a particular result or harvest by following it. Plants are living things, and how one responds depends on the variety, its health, the pot, the potting mix, the sun, wind and temperature it gets, the season and your local climate. The guides describe what to check and what usually helps; they are not a diagnosis of your plant. Sizes are starting points, planting times depend on your local frost dates, and time estimates are approximate.
Gardening information at your own risk
The content on the site is general information. It is not professional horticultural advice, nor veterinary, medical or structural advice, and it is not a substitute for advice from a qualified professional who can look at your plant, your pet, your building or you. You follow the guides at your own risk, and you are responsible for deciding whether a suggestion suits your plants and your space.
Edible crops, toxic plants and product labels
If you grow vegetables or herbs to eat, wash the produce before eating it, and use containers that have not held chemicals or unknown substances. Eat only plants you grew as food and can identify with certainty.
Some popular container plants are toxic to pets or to people if eaten. Before you bring a plant home, check it against a published source such as the ASPCA list of toxic and non-toxic plants, for the specific plant you own. A plant that is listed as non-toxic is not a plant that is safe to eat. If a pet or a child eats part of an ornamental plant, contact a veterinarian, a doctor or a poison control service right away.
If you use a fertilizer, a pesticide or any other product mentioned in a guide, always read the product label and follow it. The label on the product you bought takes priority over anything written on this site, including its directions on amounts, protective gear, use on edible plants, storage and keeping the product away from children and pets.
Heavy pots, hanging baskets and balconies
Containers filled with wet potting mix are heavy. Lifting and moving pots, hanging baskets, fixing window boxes and railing planters, and the load placed on a balcony, deck or roof are your responsibility. Follow the weight ratings and instructions of the hooks, brackets and other hardware you use, fix them into something solid, and follow the rules of your building and what its structure is designed to carry. If you are unsure, ask the building’s owner or manager, or a qualified professional, before adding weight.
